Highball, Scotch,

week of song-inspired cocktails with a Jagged Little Pill… literally. We started with the song on this one – Alanis Morissette’s “You Learn”, and built a cocktail around it. The lyrics:

Swallow it down (like a jagged little pill)
It feels so good (swimming in your stomach)

Along with her passionate tone left us with no choice but to build a cocktail that was VERY strong in flavor, and you definitely feel it on the way down. It’s a penicillin variation, with several tweaks. We used a scotch that was really smoky in flavor (a Shieldaig single malt scotch whisky), then added in Drambuie, Punt e Mes, orange and lemon juice and a 2:1 Demerara syrup. It’s so fitting with this song, but knowing not everyone wants something quite this bold, we tried swapping the scotch with a more mellow bourbon and the result was a much more approachable cocktail.
To make: Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice. Shake and serve in a highball glass with one large ice cube. Garnish with a “jagged” orange peel.
